On this day of February 11th, 2011 I am making a formal plea to our (3) unions the represent the Moreno Valley Unified School District.
I am calling upon all (3) unions to come together, and help us to come up with a realistic budget plan. We need a budget plan that reflects our current and future economic situations. A budget plan that best servers our children and teachers. We need to come to the table with “creative ideas”, and with the “will” to come up with a “real” budget plan to survive the impending storms that stand ahead.
The “Status Quo” and “Good “ol” Days” are over! We must now more than ever face the music that we are in a “Budget Crises” before it becomes to late for us to act. We must be prepared for the worst, and plan ahead.
Gov. Jerry Brown is gambling that the voters will continue and vote to pay more DMV taxes. Let me remind you that (5) years ago we were told that by paying these taxes it would balance our states budget. This as we all know did not happen, In fact we are in worse shape then we were (5) years ago. I really don’t believe that the voters of California will vote to pay more taxes they are “FED UP”. Not to long ago the voters of Moreno Valley rejected to pay higher taxes for street lighting, and would rather go dark then pay more. DMV taxes in my opinion will fail. I truly believe that the voters of California will say: ” You Can Fool Me Once, But Shame On You To Try It AGAIN”.
This is why I am making this plea to our (3) unions. Not to long ago MVEA president Janet MacMilan said at a school board meeting: ” It’s time to think out of the box”, ” Instead of with-in the box”. I could not agree with her more. It seems to me that Janet MacMilan wants to lead by example, and not status quo ideas of yester-year.
I ask you now more than ever come to the table with our district staff, and come up with a fair and realistic budget plan. There is no reason in my mind that this can’t be achieved. Remember that our children’s future is at stake, and we can ill afford to get it wrong by playing with their future.
So please do your part to make this happen. Let’s stop playing games, and get down to business. Give the “Board of Education” a fair, and realistic “BUDGET PLAN”. So I and my fellow board members can sign off on it.
Sincerely,
Mike Rios MVUSD Board of Education
